Chet Buchanan: 25 Years at KLUC-FM, 98.5, Radio (2026)

A Las Vegas broadcasting legend has decided to call it a day after a remarkable 25-year journey. Chet Buchanan, the iconic radio personality, is stepping away from the microphone, leaving behind a legacy at KLUC-FM, 98.5. But here's the twist: there wasn't a single defining moment that led to this decision.

Buchanan, a household name in Las Vegas radio, has been a fixture on the airwaves for a quarter of a century. Yet, in a surprising turn of events, he announced his departure from KLUC, with his final live show airing on January 29. The station's social media post on Friday morning confirmed the news, sparking curiosity among his loyal listeners.

KLUC's heartfelt statement acknowledged Buchanan's immense contribution: 'Thank you, @chetbuchanan, for over 25 years of dedication. Your voice and leadership have shaped our station and its connection to the Las Vegas community for almost three decades.'

The departure seemed sudden, but hints had been dropping. Buchanan's shows had been in repeat mode for weeks, and he had stopped live broadcasts. He confirms, 'I made this decision. I chose to walk away, and they were understanding.'

At 59, Buchanan remains tight-lipped about the exact reasons for his exit. However, he reveals a one-year non-compete agreement with KLUC's parent company, Audacy Inc., suggesting a gradual shift in his career path.

Beyond the airwaves, Buchanan's impact resonates. He has become a philanthropic force, particularly during the Christmas season, through the KLUC Toy Drive. For 25 years, he hosted this annual event, spending two weeks each December on a scaffold in the NV Energy parking lot, collecting donations.

The Toy Drive's success is astounding. Last year, it amassed over 6,700 bicycles and nearly $800,000 in gift cards. Buchanan's dedication was on full display as he spent 300 hours on the scaffold without a break.

Reflecting on his decision, Buchanan shares, 'After this year's Toy Drive, I realized I might not do it again. Standing on that scaffold, I questioned if I could still be there at 70.'

Buchanan's KLUC journey began in 1999, hosting 'The Morning Zoo' and later 'The Chet Buchanan Show' with Mikalah Gordon. He also lent his voice to the Las Vegas Aces as their in-arena announcer since 2018 and shared the role with the Seattle Kraken NHL team, allowing him to split his time between the two cities.

Buchanan's connection to both cities is profound. He says, 'I'm fortunate to call two places home. I have my family farm in Seattle, where I grew up, and Las Vegas, the world's greatest city. I get the best of both worlds.'

His philanthropic endeavors extend further. He has been an exceptional emcee for fundraisers like the Nevada Ballet Theatre's Black and White Gala and The Animal Foundation's dog adoption event. Additionally, he serves as board president for Project 150, supporting high school students, and is on the boards of HELP of Southern Nevada and Variety The Children's Charity of Southern Nevada.

With his broadcasting chapter closed, Buchanan looks forward to quality time with his wife, Amy. He jokes, 'We plan a road trip to Mount Rushmore and she wants to learn golf. It's about doing things together. But I'm not disappearing; I just won't be waking up at 3 AM anymore.'

This departure raises questions: What's next for Chet Buchanan? Will he return to the airwaves, or is this the end of an era? Share your thoughts in the comments, and let's discuss the future of this broadcasting legend.
