Get ready, baseball fans! The Detroit Tigers are making some serious waves in the international signing pool for 2026, and it's time to take notice. They're not just dipping their toes in the water; they're diving in headfirst, securing some of the most promising young talents from around the globe.
The Tigers are gearing up for a pair of exhibition games in the Dominican Republic against the country's national team on March 3-4, serving as a warm-up before the World Baseball Classic. But their focus is also firmly set on the future, as they're aggressively pursuing top international prospects.
Leading the charge is Randy Santana, a highly touted outfielder from the Dominican Republic. This signing marks the second year in a row that Detroit has landed a standout, right-handed hitting prospect from the D.R. (Cris Rodriguez, a top prospect in 2025). Santana, ranked as the No. 21 overall prospect, has been trained by Cristian Batista, who has also worked with MLB All-Stars Juan Soto and Elly De La Cruz.
The Tigers have a significant advantage in this year's signing period, boasting the second-highest pool money in the league at $7,357,100. Santana is one of three players, along with catcher Manuel Bolivar and shortstop Oscar Tineo, who are reportedly receiving a seven-figure bonus.
Santana, hailing from La Romana (the same city that produced former Tigers Andujar Cedeno and Jefry Marte), has impressive bat speed and the ability to backspin the ball. Evaluators believe he has the potential for even more home run power as he develops physically. He demonstrates excellent timing, balance, and pitch recognition skills, which should serve him well as he enters professional baseball.
But here's where it gets interesting: Santana's defensive abilities, particularly in right field, are where he truly shines. He possesses a powerful throwing arm, consistently hitting triple-digit throws from the outfield. Combine that with his above-average speed, and you've got a potential five-tool player in the making.
Tigers director of Latin American operations, Miguel Garcia, is excited about Santana's potential: “We all strongly believe that he's going to be able to play center field, having a plus arm and plus speed... We're pretty excited about Randy's tools.”
Another key addition to the Tigers' international class is catcher Manuel Bolivar. Bolivar is expected to receive one of the highest signing bonuses among catchers in the 2026 class, thanks to his impressive power. While he just missed the MLB Pipeline's Top 50 International Prospects list due to concerns about consistent contact, his raw power is undeniable.
The Tigers have also signed several other international free agents, including catchers Roman Silgado, infielder Eduardo Tusen, shortstop Oscar Tineo, and outfielders Douglas Olivo and Diego Orro.
Bolivar, who played for Venezuela's U15 World Cup team in 2022, has developed into a strong-armed catcher. While his arm is a definite asset, there's a possibility he might eventually outgrow the position and transition to first base. However, Detroit has shown a willingness to develop taller catchers, like Josue Briceño and Thayron Liranzo.
Garcia also expressed enthusiasm for Bolivar, stating, “This kid has a tremendous set of tools... We like his makeup, the way that he handles himself on and off the baseball field. We're pretty excited about Manuel Bolivar.”
And this is the part most people miss... The Tigers' commitment to international scouting is a key part of their overall strategy. They've consistently had a top-six farm system, and in a recent poll of MLB executives, they tied for third in hitter development and overall system. This focus on player development, combined with recent postseason appearances, suggests the Tigers are building a sustainable winning culture.
But what does this all mean for the future? International players are eligible to sign with a Major League team between January 15 and December 15. To be eligible, they must turn 16 before signing and be 17 before September 1 of the following year. This means players born between September 1, 2008, and August 31, 2009, are eligible to sign during the current period.
