The FBI is now involved in the mysterious death of the late Indianapolis Colts owner, Jim Irsay, raising serious questions that were previously left unanswered.
When Jim Irsay, the former owner of the Indianapolis Colts, passed away in May, the team initially shared that he had died "peacefully in his sleep." However, new developments have surfaced, casting a shadow of doubt over this initial account. In late August, a report from The Washington Post revealed that Irsay had been struggling with a long-standing addiction to painkillers and had experienced three overdoses in the five years leading up to his death.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Colts organization has acknowledged being aware of the FBI's investigation. In a statement released on Friday, they mentioned, "We are aware of the investigation, but at this time, we’ve not been contacted by the FBI or been served with any subpoenas." This statement suggests a degree of detachment, while the investigation is actively seeking information.
The NFL, through its spokesman Brian McCarthy, has declined to comment on the unfolding situation, adding to the air of secrecy surrounding the case.
The Washington Post further reported on Thursday that a federal grand jury subpoena, which they reviewed, indicates the FBI is actively seeking records and information pertaining to Irsay's death. This includes details about his "substance (illegal and prescription) use" and his "relationship with Dr. Harry Haroutunian," an addiction specialist based in California. The subpoena was reportedly issued by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California earlier this month, suggesting a significant federal interest.
And this is the part most people miss... Dr. Haroutunian, who was reportedly staying at the same Beverly Hills hotel where Irsay died, had prescribed pain pills and ketamine to Irsay in the months before his death in May 2025. He also reportedly signed the death certificate. Ketamine, primarily known as a general anesthetic, was apparently part of Irsay's treatment plan in his final months. The Post also noted that police were called to the hotel room where Irsay passed away.
While Irsay's official cause of death was listed as "cardiac arrest due to pneumonia and heart issues," it's noteworthy that no autopsy was performed. The Beverly Hills police department concluded their investigation into his death just days later.
Following the initial report by The Washington Post in August, Irsay's three daughters, who are now managing the Colts – Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson – released a statement acknowledging their father's struggles. They stated that he "never claimed to be perfect" and highlighted his efforts to "reduce the stigma" surrounding addiction and mental health issues, advocating for those facing similar battles. This sentiment, while understandable, now sits alongside a federal investigation into the circumstances of his passing.
