Isabelle Gaze & Amelia Kerr Power New Zealand to Series Win vs Zimbabwe | WT20I Highlights (2026)

New Zealand's Top Order Dominates Again, Clinching Series Victory!

For the second time in just three days, New Zealand's formidable batting lineup absolutely blitzed Zimbabwe, securing a decisive 2-0 lead in their three-match WT20I series on Friday, February 27th. It was a masterclass in aggressive batting that left the visitors with little to no answer.

Captain Amelia Kerr was once again at the heart of the action, flirting with a century for the second game in a row. She eventually fell for a brilliant 82 runs off just 52 balls. However, it was Isabella Gaze who stole the show with a career-best, unbeaten 85 runs off 54 balls, outscoring her captain! Together, they formed a formidable 159-run partnership, a repeat of their heroics from the first game. While New Zealand posted a massive 196 for 1 in their 20 overs, they might have felt they could have pushed for even more, especially with the score at a commanding 146/0 after 14 overs.

But here's where it gets interesting... With regular opener Georgia Plimmer sidelined, Gaze stepped up to partner Kerr. In the first match, she played a supporting role to Kerr's century. This time, however, Gaze took the reins, displaying an aggressive intent that was a joy to watch. She had struggled with her timing in the previous game, but on Friday, she was finding gaps with ease, already racking up eight boundaries by the end of the Powerplay. Kerr, meanwhile, played the role of the steady anchor, amassing 14 runs off 18 balls during this initial phase.

As soon as the Powerplay concluded, Zimbabwe turned to their spinners, but the New Zealand openers remained largely untroubled. Both batters showcased excellent footwork, with Kerr particularly effective with her sweep shots. She truly shifted gears in the 10th over, smashing four boundaries and marking her sixth consecutive 40+ score in WT20Is. While she didn't hit a six in her century last game, her second fifty of this series was punctuated by an exquisite flick for six over deep-square leg – the only maximum of the entire match!

And this is the part most people miss... Kerr's dominance only intensified. Between the 14th and 15th overs, she seemed to be toying with the field, employing sweeps both in front and behind square, and even adjusting her stance to play elegant inside-out drives over cover. Zimbabwe's bowlers and fielders seemed to have no response, further hampered by a sloppy fielding display, a stark contrast to their sharp efforts in the first T20I.

Gaze's innings was a testament to her solid technique. She started with conventional strokes, using her feet effectively against the seamers and driving the ball down the ground. It was only when she felt completely in control that she unleashed reverse-sweeps, adding a couple more boundaries to her tally. She later commented, "I looked at the way Melie played in the first game and looked at aggression at the top of the order. She has so much experience, so much to learn from her."

After Kerr's departure, New Zealand's scoring rate did dip slightly, with Zimbabwe's Adel Zimunu employing slower balls effectively in the final over to keep them just under the 200-run mark.

However, the chase was never truly on for Zimbabwe. Rattled by the early loss of Nyasha Gwanzura within the first three balls, they found themselves in survival mode. Bree Illing struck early, and New Zealand was then able to bring in their off-spinners, Nensi Patel, during the Powerplay itself, complementing the early swing from Jess Kerr.

The talented 17-year-old Beloved Biza, who impressed with an unbeaten 49 in the previous match, struggled to find her rhythm. Her attempt to take on Amelia Kerr off her second ball proved costly, leading to an easy catch at mid-wicket.

The Zimbabwean innings meandered along, with only occasional boundaries and a constant drift away from the required run-rate. Unlike the first game, they couldn't even muster the defiance to bat out the full 20 overs, with only two batters reaching double-digit scores.

Nensi Patel, in only her second T20I, had a nerve-wracking wait for her first wicket, with two dropped catches off her bowling in the 10th over. But after a moment of team support during the drinks break, her accuracy paid off, and she finished with an impressive 2 wickets for just 11 runs. Debutant seamer Kayley Knight also bowled a tight line and length, picking up a couple of wickets. Ultimately, Zimbabwe folded for 86 all out in 18.3 overs, handing New Zealand their second-biggest victory by runs (110) and sealing the series.
