Maryland Alum Matthew Smale Named Deputy AD/ CFO | Maryland Athletics Hiring Announcement (2026)

Big news for Maryland Terrapins fans! Matthew Smale, a proud Maryland alum from the class of '10, is returning to his roots as the new Deputy Athletic Director/Chief Financial Officer for Maryland Athletics. This move, announced by Jim Smith, the Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics, marks a significant homecoming and a strategic addition to the Terrapins' leadership.

Smale's primary responsibility will be to steer the Terrapins' business operations, including the management of the department's operating budget. This is a crucial role, ensuring the financial health and stability of the athletic programs.

But here's where it gets interesting: Smale is returning to Maryland after a successful stint at the University of Miami Athletics in Florida, where he served as the Senior Executive Associate Athletic Director, Business Strategy and Capital Projects. During his time with the Hurricanes, he not only managed the operating budget but also oversaw the daily functions of the business office and acted as a liaison to the university's financial departments. Notably, he also served as a sports administrator for Women's Soccer, Women's Golf, and, most impressively, for Men's Basketball during their remarkable run to the 2023 Final Four.

Jim Smith expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Welcoming Matt back home to Maryland is truly special for all of us, and we couldn't be more excited to have him rejoin the Terrapin family." He highlighted Smale's deep connection to Maryland and his extensive experience as the perfect combination to lead the department forward.

Smale himself shared his excitement, saying, "I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to return home to Maryland and serve the university that shaped so much of my personal and professional life." He emphasized his eagerness to collaborate with the team and support the student-athletes.

Before his time at Miami, Smale held various roles within the Maryland Athletic Department, including Director of Business Operations from 2016-2018. He began his journey with Maryland Athletics in November 2013 as an Accountant, quickly rising through the ranks. Prior to that, he gained valuable experience at George Washington University and with Major League Soccer's D.C. United and the Bowie Baysox, a minor league affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.

A native of Annapolis, Smale earned his degree from the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business in 2010 and later obtained his MBA from the University of Baltimore in December 2017. He and his wife, Kelly, will be relocating to the DMV, with Smale commencing his new role on January 2, 2026.

This is a significant appointment, but what do you think? Will Smale's experience and deep ties to Maryland lead to even greater success for the Terrapins? Share your thoughts in the comments!
