Big changes are coming to Jackson County's elementary schools! Three new principals have been appointed, and one of them will lead a brand-new school set to open in 2027. But here's where it gets exciting: these leaders are stepping into roles that will shape the future of education in the county. The Jackson County School System (JCSS) announced on Wednesday the hiring of Ms. Aja Ledford, Ms. Alison Stover, and Dr. Nicole Matthews as the new principals for Heroes Elementary School (HES), North Jackson Elementary School (NJES), and the upcoming Hayes Farm Elementary School (HFES), respectively.
The appointments come at a pivotal time, as Ledford and Stover replace retiring principals, while Matthews prepares to helm a school that’s still under development. Matthews will continue her role as assistant principal at West Jackson Elementary School until January 2027, giving her seven months to plan for HFES’s grand opening in August. And this is the part most people miss: the strategic timing ensures a smooth transition for students, staff, and the community.
“We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Ledford, Ms. Stover, and Dr. Matthews to these leadership roles,” said JCSS Superintendent Dr. Philip Brown. “Each brings a unique blend of experience, passion, and dedication to student success. Their commitment to excellence aligns perfectly with our vision for the Jackson County School System, and I’m confident they will foster environments where students can flourish.”
Let’s dive into their backgrounds. Ms. Aja Ledford is no stranger to HES, having served as its assistant principal since the school opened in 2024. Her journey with JCSS began in 2011, with roles at NJES, Maysville Elementary School, and West Jackson Primary School. Ledford holds a bachelor’s in early childhood education from Gainesville State College, a master’s in education, and an education specialist degree from Piedmont College.
Ms. Alison Stover, currently the assistant principal at Gum Springs Elementary School since 2021, brings a wealth of academic credentials. She earned her bachelor’s in early childhood education from the University of Georgia, a master’s in the same field from Brenau University, an education specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University, and an educational leadership certificate from Piedmont College.
Dr. Nicole Matthews has been a cornerstone at West Jackson Elementary School in Hoschton, serving as assistant principal since 2022. Her academic achievements include a bachelor’s in early childhood education from Georgia College and State University, a master’s from Piedmont College, and both an education specialist degree and a doctorate in curriculum, instruction, and assessment from Walden University.
But here’s where it gets controversial: With HFES set to become the system’s eighth elementary school in 2027, opening alongside Hoschton High School and preceding Sell’s Mill Middle School (planned for 2028), some community members are questioning whether the rapid expansion is sustainable. Is the county growing too quickly, or is this a necessary step to accommodate its booming population? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
These appointments mark a significant step forward for Jackson County’s education landscape. As these leaders prepare to take the helm, one thing is clear: the future looks bright for the students they’ll serve. What do you think about the new principals and the county’s expansion plans?
