Northumberland Line Extension: A Step Towards Revitalizing Newbiggin-by-the-Sea (2026)

Northumberland County Council has submitted a formal bid to extend the Northumberland Line, a railway line that has seen over 900,000 passenger journeys since its reopening, to the coastal town of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. This extension is a significant step towards improving connectivity and accessibility in the region.

The Conservative leader of the council, Glen Sanderson, acknowledges the potential cost of this project, stating, 'It is going to be very expensive, but I'm sure it will be worthwhile.' The Labour North East Mayor, Kim McGuinness, supports the idea and emphasizes the line's proven value to local residents, investing £10.9 million to ensure its completion.

The Northumberland Line already connects southeast Northumberland to Tyneside, and the proposed extension would require new track laying, unlike the existing freight lines used for the reopened sections. Despite the fact that two stations, Bedlington and Northumberland Park, are still under construction and scheduled to open in early 2026, the line's success has sparked discussions about extending it further.

Newbiggin-by-the-Sea holds historical significance as the final stop on the Blyth and Tyne Railway, with a station serving the town from 1872 until 1964. The council believes that extending the line to Newbiggin would be a logical and popular choice for the North East Combined Authority (NECA), addressing the need for improved transportation in the area.

As the bid progresses, the council and the NECA will work together to determine the feasibility and cost of the extension, with the potential to enhance connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
