Yanees Loses 22-Year-Old Pitcher to Mariners
The Rule 5 Draft took place on Wednesday, and the Yankees watched right-hander Sean Hermann move to the Seattle Mariners in the draft’s minor league segment.
Hermann joined the Yankees as an 18-year-old in 2021. Although he was Rule 5 eligible, he wasn’t on the team’s Triple-A roster, which made him available in the minor league phase of the draft. The Mariners picked him with the 23rd selection in Round 2 of the Triple-A phase, making him the 38th player chosen in that phase overall.
During his time in the Yankees organization, Hermann progressed as far as High-A by 2023. He missed the 2024 season due to a full-season injured list stint and spent last year back at Single-A.
Before his injury-induced layoff in 2024, Hermann was a starting pitcher. He tallied 10 starts in 2022 with a 2.52 ERA. The next year, he posted a 4.79 ERA across 23 starts. In the most recent season, he appeared in 37 games but did not start any, recording a 3.17 ERA.
Opponents batted only .211 against him, the best mark of his time with the Yankees, and he struck out 45 batters at a 61% strikeout rate. The Yankees originally drafted him in the 14th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Durant High School in Plant City, Florida. He now has another opportunity to refine his craft with the Mariners, a organization known for developing pitching talent over the years.
